The route ventures through berry-laden forests and alpine slopes, offering hikers a thrilling ascent and rewarding vistas.
Trail Details:
Trail Length: Approximately 8.5 miles round-trip
Duration: Roughly 6 to 8 hours
Difficulty Level: Hard
Elevation Gain: Around 3,450 ft
Trail Type: Out-and-back
Key Features:
Switchback Forest Ascent: The trail begins through dense berry-filled forest, climbing steadily via new switchbacks that ease the pitch compared to the old, more direct route. These switchbacks also offer scenic sidehill views.
Alpine Transition: Beyond about 1.5 miles and 1,200 ft of gain, the forest opens up to expansive views of Porcupine Creek and Resurrection Creek valleys.
Turnagain Arm Viewpoints: Around the 2.5-mile mark, glimpses of Turnagain Arm begin to emerge, growing ever more dramatic as you climb.
Summit Ridge & Panorama: The final push takes you up rocky terrain to the summit ridge. The peak, often windy, delivers sweeping, jaw-dropping panoramas of Turnagain Arm and the surrounding mountain arena.
Wildlife: Keep an eye out for Dall sheep higher up and bald eagles soaring overhead.
Trailhead Information:
Starting Point: Trailhead located along Hope Highway just west of Hope, roughly 1.4 miles past the Old Hope Road turnoff, near Porcupine Campground.
Parking: Limited parking; trailhead includes a vault toilet. Aim to arrive early to secure a spot.
Best Season to Visit:
Summer to Early Fall (June – October): Snow generally melts out by summer, making the route accessible; fall offers crisp air and potentially clearer views. Early season hikes may still encounter lingering snow near the summit.
Trail Tips:
Gear: Sturdy boots are essential, and trekking poles can help stabilize the steep climb and descent. A windbreaker and layers are advisable—summit winds can chill even warm hikers.
Water: Bring ample water—only a small creek near the trailhead provides a water source.
Switchbacks vs. Old Route: Stick to the newer, more sustainable switchbacks to avoid erosion and for a safer, more manageable ascent.
Wildlife Safety: Observe wildlife from a distance—no specific bears noted here, but always be bear-aware in Alaska. Mountain goats or sheep may be seen at higher elevations.
Leave No Trace: Pack out all trash, stay on trail to protect fragile alpine zones, and tread lightly.
Trail Highlights:
Valley Views: Early views across Porcupine and Resurrection Creek valleys offer scenic motivation to push upward.
Arm Vistas: The expanding views of Turnagain Arm are a highlight; the summit delivers full-throttle panoramas.
Berry-Forest Charm: The forested lower trail, rich with berry bushes, offers early-season hikers a fragrant, atmospheric climb.
Alpine Expanse: Above treeline, the openness and ridge walk offer a real sense of immersion in Alaska’s mountain grandeur.
Photography & Vistas: Golden light and wide views make this trail ideal for photographers—alpine terrain and waterway views shine at sunrise or sunset.
Additional Information:
Weather: Alaska weather can shift fast—even in summer. Bring layers, check the forecast, and be prepared for sudden wind or precipitation.
Trail Condition: Thanks to recent switchback improvements, the trail is more manageable but still steep. Expect rugged terrain near the top and prepare accordingly.
